Microsoft is quite disappointed over the fact that it has lost a 6.7 million USD government e-mail contract to its rival company, Google Inc. The General Services Administration chose Google Gmail over Microsoft Outlook to provide email services to its 15,000 employees. Microsoft officials are simply shocked by the GSA’s decision.
Senior director of Online Services at Microsoft Tom Rizzo said that he was quite disappointed over the outcome. However, he said that the company will try to learn more on the selection criteria of the General Services Administration. Tom Rizzo said that the company will pay more attention to the demands of GSA related to security and architecture.
GSA stated earlier that using cloud based email service will allow the agency to cut down email spending by half. Till now, the agency had been using Lotus Notes by IBM and the messaging system by Domino.
Microsoft had no idea that GSA would not be convinced by the Office Live Suite and Office. The rejection was apparently a bitter experience for the company, as Rizzo wasted no time trashing Google’s Gmail service.
In a blog post, Rizzo wrote that Google fails to satisfy even basic needs of consumers. Also, Rizzo pointed out that Google did not allow customers to make flexible choices, while Microsoft allowed them to make choices according to their specific productivity needs.
He was pointing out the fact that Microsoft provides a desktop, as well as cloud-based version of Office, while Google applications, particularly Gmail, is offered only as hosted and cloud services to customers.
